"The Tube" means "the metro" in British English! (Don't confuse that with American English!)
Over Spring Break we went to England! First stop was London!
If you want to get around in London, the quickest way is to take the London Underground, more commonly known as the Tube. Our first stop was the Oxford Circus station and we saw everything we wanted to see in London in an hour, all at one stop!
When you think of London, what do you think of?
Palace guards wearing bearskin hats?
Red telephone booths?
The Royal Wedding?
We even met the Queen!
And we did it all at Hamley's famous toy store! Seven floors of endless toys and crazy salespeople demonstrating them all! It was basically like going to a gianormous party of awesomeness!
Who else do you think of when you think London? My mom thinks of her favorite detective, Sherlock Holmes.
We had to visit 221B Baker's Street.
He's not even real, but apparently his house is.
He even has his own dry cleaners across the street!
And a restaurant named after him!
Another short tube ride away...and you will find another favorite London celebrity...
William Shakespeare!
His Globe Theatre still shows plays!
It burned down and they had to rebuild it, so it's not the original one, but they tried to make it just the same. (Except now it has sprinklers on the roof to avoid future fires.)
Speaking of theatre, we went to a few plays in the West End while we were there.
First we went to Monty Python's Spamalot!
If you've ever seen Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail, you will be familiar with the plot...but in this version, they actually go to Camelot - such a silly place! It was more fun than a barrel full of herrings and whole forest full of shrubberies.
We also went to see Wicked.
If you've ever seen The Wizard of Oz, you might be familiar with the plot...but in this version, the witch of the west may not be as wicked as you think...Confusing, right?
Hop on the tube again...
And pop up at the Millennium Bridge.
It's a footbridge that goes across the Thames River. (You might recognize it from Harry Potter...for two seconds you might see it wobbling and twisting, and all the people on it falling to their doom.)
It was a little windy, but we didn't fall to our doom.
Across the bridge is St. Paul's Cathedral.
This is supposed to be the cathedral where Mary Poppins takes Jane and Michael and they see the bird lady....Remember that song..."Feed the Birds...."
Yeah, that wasn't shot here. The whole movie was filmed inside a studio in California.
But this is where they were supposed to have been.

Other forms of transportation in London include the taxi cab. (Notice the steering wheel is on the wrong side...)
Actually, it's on the right side for Londoners, who drive on the left hand side of the road. (Weird!)
You can also go by double-decker bus.
They are everywhere.
And they're all red. (Except for the triple decker bus we saw. That was purple...and you'll see it later!)
Back on the tube....
and we'll head to the British Museum.
It's this giant, free museum kind of like the Smithsonian museums in Washington, D.C.
They had a lot of cool Egyptian stuff and mummies.
Mesopotamian frescos...
Japanese samurais...
Scary green dude....
(gives me the creeps!)
Easter Island dude....
Cool cielings here!
Ramses II with his head half knocked off...
And my favorite, the Rosetta Stone...
We also visited the Tate Modern.
It's a big old warehouse turned into a modern art museum.
Half of it was pointless....
And the other half was just weird....
