Botanischen Gärten

"Botanischen Gärten" means "botanical gardens" in German!

Last week we went to St. Bartholomew's Cathedral in Frankfurt.  We were going to climb to the top of the tower, but because it was snowing, the tower was closed for the day.

 

They had a really big organ.

 

And cool stained glass windows.

 

The sleet the night before had frozen into ice and when we drove the ice slid off our car a little bit in a sheet.  Look at this!!!

 

So since we couldn't climb the Cathedral tower, instead we decided to go to the botanical gardens called the "Palmengarten."  All of the plants were inside a bunch of different greenhouses depending on where they were from.

 

Look at the "Tropicarium" (we are inside, looking out!)

 

In between the greenhouses they had large gardens and park areas (which are obviously not as fun in the middle of winter...)  But still cool (literally).

Here is a really dramatic picture of the coolest flower we saw there.....Of course you can't see it because the picture is blurry.  This is what happens when you take a very cold camera into a very warm and humid greenhouse....

Moderne Kunst

"Moderne Kunst" means "modern art" in German!

This weekend we went on a trip to Frankfurt.  While we were there we went to an art museum called the Städel Museum.  The museum we went to was one of many museums on a long strip of museums along the Main River.  (It's called the "Mine" River, even though it is spelled "Main."  Because that's how the German's say it.)

In the museum there is a section with modern art.  When we first walked in there was a big wall of little mirrors put together to make one big mirror (kind of like a disco ball.)

 

There was some wierd stuff there.

Some of it was pretty cool.

 

And some of it was..........well........yeah.

Kieran was wondering why they framed a big bunch of scribble scrabble.

 

Black paper.  Hmmmmm......

 

What is this?  Airplane seats or something?

 

They had really cool circle skylights.

 

Not all of the art was modern.  There was a lot of paintings by really famous artists.

I'm glad we came the the museum early, because otherwise, we would have to wait in the line that continues well off the picture.  (Not to mention it was hailing outside...)
