As we entered the Port of Lisbon one morning on our cruise, we saw the sun coming up and a statue in the distance. At first we weren't sure what it was, but then we could see it.
It was the statue "Cristo Rei," a famous statue of Jesus.
The ship cruised underneath the bridge and past the statue.
There it is!
We didn't spend very long in Lisbon. We quickly got on a train and rode out of town to Sintra, which is a city where the old kings of Portugal used to live.
This is Sintra Palace.
So this is a big area that had a ton of different castles and palaces all in the same section, along with a big forest. This was an old Moorish castle used for defenses.
It sits on the top of a big hill...
Which we climbed up to...of course...
Tada!
You could see all the other palaces from there.
We took a break at the top.
And then we hiked back down...
And climbed up to the next palace on a nearby hill. There were some gardens on the way.
Here we were about to the top of the next hill. This was called the Pena Palace.
The last kings of Portugal lived here.
It was really more colorful than any other palace I had seen.
It also had a lot of different styles mixed together.
And here is Kieran jumping off of something, in front of an important building...haven't seen that before!

There was an inner courtyard here, where you could see the tall clock tower.
Lots of fancy archways...
It almost looks like Disneyland or something!
Sadly, we had to take the train back to Lisbon....with tired feet from climbing hills all day.
As we left the port, we sailed back past the Cristo Rei statue, this time at sunset.

One last look....
And Hello, Monaco!
Another day on our cruise, we stopped in Savona, Italy...rented a car...and drove to Monaco.
We walked through the Japanese Gardens.
Kieran thought it was cool that they had a formula one car statue thing...Monaco has a formula one Grand Prix race there each year.
We made our way to the famous Monte Carlo Casino.
Ta-da! Notice the Ferraris parked out front.
We thought it was funny later on that night when we watched the movie Madagascar 3. The opening scene with the car chase and the King of Versailles was everywhere we had just walked that day! Including the casino.
Monte Carlo was really, really clean and nice. This must be why. You're not allowed to do anything there except throw for things in the trash.
Another Ferrari. Daddy was getting excited.
Well, everything was really big and pretty.
In fact, we spent a little too much time looking at everything, because we had to jump in our car and get back to our cruise ship quickly before it was too late!
And guess what...we made it...
Just in the nick of time! (We had to run back from the car rental place...)
